TITLE: One For Sorrow
YEAR: 2022
INSPIRATION: This piece is created from my own reference photos taken at the wonderful conservation orientated Chester Zoo. There are less than fifty of the beautiful Javan green magpie in the world and I felt inspired to share their story and raise awareness of their vulnerability. Perched high on a branch watching the world go by, the bright plumage stood out from behind the bars, a scene that had to be captured. The piece had to be bright to do justice to the subject and I wanted it to strike the viewer with its beauty from afar like the bird does in reality. I had a dilemma in including the cage that was in the reference photo and opted not to and instead placed a blue sky background which suggests hope and freedom for a species that truely deserves its place in our shared world.
