TITLE: English Bulldog
YEAR: 2016
INSPIRATION: This piece shows the beautiful English bulldog in all it’s glory. I’ve used the colours of the Union Jack in acrylic paints for the background and soft pastels to bring the dogs character to life. I wanted to create a series of two paintings which shows that we are a nation of dog lovers. When researching the most popular dog breeds I found the French and English bulldogs to be among the top 10. I love all dogs equally but I feel that it’s quite sad that these dogs, among others, suffer so much due to inbreeding. In order to create a cuter looking dog, or a dog with a stronger jaw these dogs were bred in such a way that they’ve developed serious health problems. Both distinctive in their own right and loved by many, these are the perfect subject matter to show that yes we are dog lovers…but at what cost?
