TITLE: Funkiest Zebra
YEAR: 2020
INSPIRATION: The zebra is a wonderful animal to work with and I really wanted to showcase their character, individuality and majesty in a piece of work. I wanted to represent the Grévy’s zebra, a species of zebra who contrary to the typical wider known species of zebra live alone or in a loosely associated herd, instead of a large close herd. The zebra was a natural fit for my colour pop collection with it’s striking black and white skin pattern and this contrasts with the regal purple background. The work shouts majesty in the viewer’s face unapologetically and is unashamedly dressed in gold accessories in a ostentatious display meant to strike and challenge. The punk style mohawk has long been seen as a ’finger up’ to the establishment and the zebra wears it challenging his own place in the piece and expresses a desire for freedom from the normal.
