TITLE: Horsing Around
YEAR: 2021
INSPIRATION: After creating my Pride Cows piece, I was inspired to draw attention to working animals, specifically equine species who work tirelessly all year round. I wanted to show each animals personality, and to remind people that these are beautiful creatures that should be protected. I knew I wanted to include a horse and donkey as these are among the most worked equines in the world, but I felt I needed a third animal to balance the stack…this is when my research took me to zebras. They look just like horses, ok not exactly like them but you know what I mean, so why are they not domesticated? There has been many attempts to get these animals to do the heavy work of horses and donkeys alike, yet they resisted. It turns out they just aren’t very people friendly, and as a species they don’t fit the criteria for domestication. This idea was worth pursuing, and with this piece I want to show off the flamboyant zebra who refuses to be saddled. Each one of my stackable equines have a certain charm, and they are much loved world wide with many kept as pets. A horse would probably love to be a zebra, live wild and not have a care in the world.
