TITLE: I’m Ready For My Close Up
YEAR: 2022
INSPIRATION: I created this painting after being inspired by a beautiful baby orangutan I saw while at Chester zoo. This little baby called Dot climbed all the way from the bottom of the enclosure to come up to the glass where I was stood, in all the excitement I managed to take a few reference photos to work from later. I can’t explain how happy I was to see Dot so close, to the point where she was practically kissing the glass…so naturally I had to put this in a painting. This painting truly celebrates the curious nature of this species and is a reflection of my own enquiring mind, and the need to learn about the world and the creatures in it. With this piece I’m asking for you to reflect on Bornean orangutans critically endangered status, and the hope that we can preserve these beautiful creatures for generations to come. Upon finishing this piece I donated a print to the zoo and it’s currently on display for all the primate keepers to enjoy.
