TITLE: That Was Yesterday

YEAR: 2016

INSPIRATION: This piece was inspired by the song ‘That Was Yesterday’ by Foreigner. I wanted to explore the feeling of longing for a past that cannot be reclaimed. The gorilla felt like the right subject, I see them as strong, stoic, and able to carry the weight of loss. I chose a dark and troubled background to reflect the emotional burden that grief places on all of us. In film, subjects often move from left to right, which subconsciously suggests progress and positivity. I chose to reverse that, inviting the viewer to sit with the discomfort and reflect on what it means to look back. This painting is not about despair, but about honesty. It asks the viewer to pause and consider the quiet strength it takes to carry sorrow. I hope it offers a moment of connection for anyone who has felt the ache of yesterday.
