TITLE: Wattle We Become?
YEAR: 2025
INSPIRATION: This piece was inspired by my own reference photos taken at Tenerife Jungle Park, where I encountered the awe inspiring cassowary. With its vibrant prehistoric appearance and commanding presence, the bird captivated me, but it was the wattle, a vividly coloured feature hanging from its throat, that truly fascinated me. The wattle serves both as a dramatic visual element and a vital tool for communication and display, enhancing the cassowary’s already imposing character. Known as the “world’s most dangerous bird,” the cassowary embodies a delicate balance of strength and fragility. As habitat loss threatens its survival, this painting highlights its unique beauty and resilience while reflecting on the challenges of preserving its future. Through this work, I aim to spark awareness and inspire action to protect not only this species but the fragile ecosystems that sustain it.
