TITLE: Wattle We Become?
YEAR: 2025
INSPIRATION: This piece was inspired by reference photos I took at Tenerife Jungle Park, where I met the awe inspiring cassowary. Its vibrant, prehistoric appearance and commanding presence captivated me… but it was the wattle, a vividly coloured feature hanging from its throat, that truly fascinated me. The wattle is both a dramatic visual element and a tool for communication, adding to the cassowary’s imposing character. Known as the world’s most dangerous bird, it carries a delicate balance of strength and fragility. As habitat loss threatens its survival, this painting highlights its beauty and resilience while reflecting on the challenges of conservation. Through this work, I hope to spark awareness and inspire action to protect not only this species, but the fragile ecosystems that support it.
