TITLE: The Confrontation

YEAR: 2026

INSPIRATION: This painting was inspired by an Asiatic lion I saw at London Zoo, he was pacing back and forth in front of the viewing window, while we watched and waited for him to return, and it felt as though we were both studying each other. Lions are incredibly observant animals, using their eyes, body language and vocalisations to communicate, and when he finally stopped and made direct eye contact with us, there was an undeniable intensity in that stare. It genuinely felt like a confrontation, even though there was a pane of glass between us. I kept the paint quite loose for this piece so I could focus on the movement and beautiful range of colours in his fur. I’m really happy with how the finished piece retains a sense of movement, despite capturing that moment of stillness in his gaze.
