TITLE: High And Mighty
YEAR: 2025
INSPIRATION: This painting was inspired by a red panda I saw at Blackpool Zoo after we’d spent quite some time waiting for him to make an appearance, only to leave empty handed. Later, we returned to the enclosure to see if he was finally willing to show himself, and there he was, high up in a tree, looking down at us as almost amused by our efforts, as if he was quietly saying, “Did you spot me? I’ve been here the whole time!” He eventually began his careful climb down, moving effortlessly through the branches before wandering around the enclosure. Red pandas are incredibly agile climbers and spend much of their lives high in the trees, so perhaps he was exactly where he wanted to be all along. There was something mischievous about that first glance and I’m convinced he knew we’d been looking for him.
