TITLE: Pigeon Party
YEAR: 2022
INSPIRATION: This painting is a homage to the humble street pigeon. I set out to show the beauty and poise I see in these birds… even though some dismiss them as rubbish eating vermin. As I explored background colours to complement the subject, I started thinking about how pigeons divide opinion and that led me to another creature we share our planet with… politicians. The suits, the coloured ties, the grey answers, the comparison felt oddly fitting. I chose red, blue, yellow and green to represent the leading UK parties. My original aim was to celebrate the common pigeon, but the journey took me somewhere unexpected. The more I explored the idea, the more I enjoyed it. It wasn’t what I set out to do, but the art led me there, and I’m glad it did. Politics and pigeons… who knew they had so much in common?
