TITLE: Sugar

YEAR: 2023

INSPIRATION: For the King’s coronation, I wanted to reflect on the Royal Family’s lifelong love of animals, especially corgis. The Queen’s first corgi, Susan, was gifted to her on her 18th birthday in 1944 and became her constant companion, even joining her and the Duke of Edinburgh on their honeymoon. Susan later had two puppies with Lucky Strike — Honey, given to the Queen Mother, and Sugar, given to Prince Charles. This painting is entitled Sugar, in honour of that legacy. I chose rich purple tones for the background to echo the corgi’s royal connection, and gave her a look of joyful anticipation, as if waiting for a crown of her own. For me, this piece is about more than tradition. It celebrates the way love for animals is passed down through generations, alongside duty. I hope it captures the warmth and connection that corgis have brought to royal life.
