TITLE: Sugar
YEAR: 2023
INSPIRATION: For the King’s coronation I wanted to capture my feelings for the Royal family, I chose to celebrate their eternal love of animals, specifically corgis. The Queen’s first corgi Susan had an incredible impact on her life, so much so that they became inseparable and she even accompanied her and the Duke of Edinburgh on their honeymoon. Susan was given to the Queen as an 18th birthday present in 1944 and later went on to have two puppies with Lucky Strike, one called Honey given to the Queen Mother and the other named Sugar given to Prince Charles. I’ve used purple tones for the background to give a nod to the dogs nobility, and I’ve given the corgi a look of excitement and anticipation, eagerly awaiting a crown. This piece is entitled Sugar as my way of expressing how not only the Queen’s love of dogs was passed on to King Charles, but her Royal duties.
