TITLE: What Do Gorillas Dream Of?
YEAR: 2024
INSPIRATION: I’ve created several gorilla paintings over the years in a variety of poses, showing strong formidable animals all in powerful poses. However, I’ve never depicted one as vulnerable before, until I went to Blackpool Zoo and saw one having an afternoon nap. The Westland Lowland gorillas are critically endangered but sometimes it’s hard to see them in that way because of how formidable they look. I immediately saw a different side to these beautiful animals, I saw a true vulnerability and it made me want to protect him. I’d never seen this before, and the peaceful look on his face stayed with me long after we’d left. I’ve never felt so compelled to paint a feeling before, and I truly hope I’ve captured a sense of peace with this painting. The only question that remains…what do gorillas dream of?
