TITLE: Who’s A Good Dog?
YEAR: 2023
INSPIRATION: At the time of painting this piece I was extremely new to oil paints and have always viewed them as a ‘grown up’ medium, something which always daunted me so I stuck with the much safer acrylics. I had the idea for this painting and thought it would look more powerful using oils, so it was time to force myself out of my comfort zone and tackle this medium head on. I wanted this piece to be a celebration of not only mine but our nations love of dogs, I used a Dalmatian as a way to focus on the joy that dogs bring us by adding explosions of colour. This painting took me on a journey of learning and discovery as I tried to get my head around this new medium. I made mistakes, which I enjoyed fixing and it allowed me to experiment with different application techniques. By using a paint brush for the finer details and a palette knife to add the colour that this piece needed it gives the painting a depth I was hoping to achieve.
